All company directors must now have a director identification number (director ID) which is a unique identifier that you keep forever. The purpose of the director ID is to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.
Your director ID will remain your own even if you:
- change companies
- stop being a director
- change your name
- move interstate or overseas.
Watch this 3-minute video from the ATO which provides a simple explanation of why you need a director ID and how to apply.

2. Online application
This is a two-step process:
- The first step is to download the myGovID app which is different to your myGov account and set up your profile.
- The second step is to apply for your Director’s ID which can only be done once your myGovID profile is live.
You’ll need relevant documents on hand for both steps to make this a seamless process.
